Dustin Colgan: Let the Season Begin

The Brockport 2011-2012 track season has begun and is in full swing. We are about four weeks into practice and things are looking extremely well for the up and coming indoor season. The combination of returners, transfers, and freshmen will makes us a team to take seriously this season. When I say that we have an amazing freshmen and transfer class, I mean it. The energy and the dedication that they bring to this team is contagious and it has caught on with the rest of the team. We had some great senior performers on the team last year that we needed to fill the gap for this season, and the freshmen and transfers are exceeding their expectations. Across the board within the different events on this team, things are looking great and the atmosphere is at an all-time high. Athletes that were on the team last year have a new fire under them to do better than last year and being satisfied with an “ok” performance is no longer acceptable. We had some solid individual performances last season but we fell short as a team. This year our goal is not be content with doing well, but to COMPETE every time we set into our blocks or get into that circle. Competing is does not mean winning, but having that attitude that that person next to me is going to get everything I got so they better watch out. Track is ultimately a TEAM sport. When it comes down to the Conference meet, individual wins are great but in the end what people remember is how well the TEAM did. If we stay on track with how things are going, being a successful TEAM will not be a problem this season.

Dustin Colgan: Welcome

Hello, my name is Dustin Colgan and I am a track and field student athlete at the College at Brockport. Recently the athletic staff of the College at Brockport has approached me in asking if I was interested in writing a blog about my personal experiences of being a student athlete at the college. In return, I jumped at the idea of having the opportunity to share my experiences to an audience who may or may not know what the college has to offer from a student athlete’s perspective. Over the course of the indoor and outdoor seasons, I will be posting about my firsthand accounts ranging from how the season is shaping up, juggling school work and athletics, transferring from another college, and everything in between. To wrap up this first post I will give a brief biography of myself and explain how I got to where I am today. I am currently a full time student, dual majoring in Physical Education and Health Science. My goals with my degrees are to become a teacher and a coach in any grade level of education. I am originally from Rome, NY where I graduated from Rome Free Academy in 2007. I was a three sport athlete, playing soccer, basketball, and baseball. After high school, I enrolled at Mohawk Valley Community College where I majored in Liberal Art and Sciences with a Physical Education emphasis.  At MVCC, I was on the baseball team for a season and decided baseball was no longer what I wanted to do. While away from baseball, I was approached by the track coach to throw the javelin because it had a correlation with a baseball throw and that’s where my track career began. In Fall 2009, I transferred into the College at Brockport and joined the track team where events such as shot put, discus, hammer and weight throw were all introduced to me, where it ultimately lead me here today writing a blog about all the questions and answers  missing throughout those time periods and into today. I am really looking forward to this upcoming track season and sharing what is going on throughout the course of the seasons.
